Immediately after S.S.C. and after having passed the Intermediate Drawing Grade Exam, students can enroll for this one year course in Foundation Art. Understanding the basic forms and fundamentals of drawing and designing is given utmost priority in this course. Students are encouraged to explore the relationship between seeing and feeling. This course is a pre-requisite for students who further wish to pursue their education in Applied Art or Textile Designing.

Regular workshops are conducted by artists and eminent people related to the world of art & design, to explore different facets of colours and 2D / 3D design. This helps to open up new horizons for the students at an interactive level.
Annual study tours are organized to different places in and around India, where students do sketches and paint landscapes. This gives them a greater appreciation of the history, art and culture of our country.
The students' efforts are put on display at the Annual Exhibition of the Sophia Polytechnic which is held at the end of February each year. The exhibition is well attended by professionals from the field of advertising & design and is a great showcase of the students work through the year.
Students are encouraged and assisted in participating in competitions at a City and State level to raise their standards of excellence.
Through the year value education classes in ethics are conducted for all students who are also encouraged to participate in annual essay and book review competitions.

Prof. Vishwas Narhari Yande
He served in different teaching posts over a span of 38 years with the Sir J.J. College of Architecture, Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts and retired as Professor and Head of the Drawing & Painting Department of the Sir J.J. School of Arts in 1985. During his luminous career he has received numerous awards, prizes and citations including The State Award in Applied Art in 1976. He has made important contributions in the creation of The Directorate of Art (Maharashtra) as well as the Industrial Design Centre at I.I.T. Powai. He has been on the visiting faculty for: NIFT, SNDT, Sophia Polytechnic, B.D. Somani Institute of Art & Fashion Technology and L.S. Raheja Technical Institute to name a few.
He has written several articles on Art over the years as well as a book on Applied Art & The History of Indian Textile Design for the State Government. In addition to several commissioned prestigious assignments in art and design, he invented an innovative print making technique named Metaglio and also invented the process for producing 35mm 3D slides for the first time in India.

Ms. Zeenia K. Patel, a student of Foundation Art took part in a National Level Exhibition - student category organised by the Bombay Art Society. We are proud to announce that her sculpture was selected and finally sold for a price of Rs.50,000

Please Note: Students are required to read the prospectus thoroughly.
Forms for all courses are issued and accepted by the Polytechnic only after May 2nd till the 1st week of June approximately.
Students who have passed the Intermediate Drawing Grade Exam and have passed their S.S.C. / I.C.S.C. / equivalent exam are eligible to apply.
Admission is on the basis of merit of marks obtained at the qualifying exam with reservations of seats for Backward Class Candidates.
2% marks per year, are deducted from the 10th Std. marks of students who have passed their exam two years prior to admission.
The results of the final selection will be displayed on the notice board.
Students are expected to pay their fees within 48 hours of the selection. Failing this, the seat will be given to another student.
Examinations are held at the end of each term. Student achievement is further judged through a system of internal assessment. The Institute reserves the right to retain any piece of examination / class work.
The students must submit the following documents with their admission form. These will not be returned.

Photo copy of the Intermediate Drawing Grade Exam certificate
2 copies of a photograph of the candidate ( 4cms. x 5 cms.)
Original certificates will have to be submitted to the teacher in-charge
at the time of admission.
Kindly note that students who secure a seat for the Foundation Art Course are not guaranteed a seat for either the course in Applied Art or course in Textile Designing.
